Performers who go on reality TV talent shows don’t usually have much of a message to deliver. Wiyaala – certainly does. A winner of the Vodafone Icons reality show in Ghana, her music comes packed with purpose; she’s rallied both for women’s rights and against child marriage. The epitome of a free-thinking, liberated woman herself, she’s one of the major voices of young Ghana, keen to engage with global culture while not relinquishing a grasp of her heritage. ‘We love our ‘African-ness’,’ she says, ‘but we also want to embrace and take our place as equal citizens in the modern world.’

Wiyaala is also a member of GRRRL, the international all girl band who are booked to play at the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2018 in Australia.

Wiyaala’s performance credits include WOMAD UK, Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club, BBC Three and numerous festivals in the UK, Germany, Denmark, France, Morocco and Canada. In Africa, she has performed alongside Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Joss Stone, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Yemi Alade, Davido and many others.
