Long Division 2018 took place over five days, from May 30th to June 3rd. It was the largest Long Division yet drawing well over 3000 attendees, using 25 different venues. programming over 150 different events, performances and exhibitions. It was amazing to get so many positive reviews not just of the festival, but of our city.
Our focus was on bringing the new to Wakefield. 90% of the performers had never appeared at Long Division before. Our project Arts Council funded “A Manifesto For A New Wakefield” saw us commission thirteen new pieces of work by Wakefield based artists, debuted at the festival. We delved into young people workshops, jazz and spoken word for the first time and delivered a total of 37 days of free exhibitions to the city. We also brought new curational voices to the city by handing over stages to the likes of BBC Introducing, Yorkshire Music Forum, Girls That Gig and Wakefield based spoken word performer Simon Widdop.
There were so many highlights for us; Billy Bragg’s three appearances – a full Wakefield Cathedral as the Saturday headliner, a secret show at Wah Wah Records that same afternoon that was so full it melted the vinyl, and an in conversation event at Wakefield Town Hall the day after he was honoured with an Ivor Novello award. Astounding sets from The Lovely Eggs, King Creosote, Marnie, Charlotte Hatherley, Cud and so many, many more. The buzz around the BBC Introducing stage, our first time out on the precinct in the heart of Wakefield City Centre. The astounding works we helped create through the Manifesto project. The hugely positive vibes around our family friendly activities and the closing Sunday performance by The Magic Of the Beatles.
